Blog Post 5

I changed my project objectives again, and for the final time! My objectives are now to make professional maps. I decided with my professional goals of environmental interpretation and/or environmental advocacy I would have to be proficient at making professional looking panels, posters, flyers, blogs, etc. So, this week I made adjustments to my two professional maps...

  • I adjusted the neat line to fit the whole page
  • changed the position of the map location and legend
  • changed the north arrow
  • got rid of my name because that will be on the title of the poster
  • changed the color of the symbols in the map showing mean area so it is easier to see
  • added a description (although I will probably adjust that to be on my final poster)
  • added the logo of the National Snow and Ice Data Center

I played around with trying to figure out how to get rid of the white space on the map to make the text on the poster look similar to those we looked at in class. However, I was unsuccessful. I will look into that more next week, although I have an idea for the poster if that does not work out in time. If I am feeling really ambitious I might break each map up into eastern and western hemispheres so i can zoom more into the denser glacial areas.

  1. The whole map and layout looks really good. My only suggestion would be to enlarge he map area and dedicate less space to the text/legend area. That might help with some of the white space issue you mentioned. Still a very professional looking map.

  2. Hi buddy!
I like how these are coming along! The layout of the map is very nice. A couple suggestions: I'm not sure if varying point size and varying point color is the best way to display glacial area/elevation and temperature, respectively. Is there some way you could graph a relationship between glacial elevation/area and CO2 emissions and or temperature? And then make graduated color maps of each variable (glacial elevation, glacial area, CO2 emissions, and temperature)and just display them as desperate maps side-by-side? JUST SUGGESTIONS THOUGH U DONT HAVE TO DO THIS.
